October 30, 2017:  Associate Diane Laranja was interviewed by CondoBusiness for an article about the potential impact of cannabis legalization on the residential construction workplace. Laranja spoke about employers’ duty to both provide a safe workplace and accommodate people with disabilities, as well as the need for employers to update their workplace policies.

October 27, 2017:  Filion’s Hamilton, Ontario office was named Best Employment Law Firm by over 130,000 Hamilton Spectator readers in the newspapers 26th Annual Readers’ Choice Awards.

Hamilton Spectator readers also chose Hamilton partner, Jane Gooding, as one of the top three employment lawyers in the region. Jane was called to the Ontario bar in 2006 and practices exclusively in labour, human rights and disability law.

October 24, 2017:  Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti is proud to announce that senior partner, Jamie Knight, has been named Canadian HR Reporter’s 2017 Employment Lawyer of the Year, as selected by Canadian Lawyer Magazine. Jamie has over 30 years’ experience representing management in labour and employment law. He has authored or co-authored some 20 publications for human resources professionals and lawyers, most of them in multiple editions, including the Employment Litigation Manual, Halsbury’s Laws of Canada; Labour, and Accommodation in the Workplace, as well as several Quick Reference Guides to key labour and employment legislation. September 18, 2017: Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti is pleased to welcome Rusty McLay as a Senior Partner in our London office. Rusty has 22 years’ experience as a management-side labour and employment lawyer, including many years as counsel to tech innovator BlackBerry. September 5, 2017: The firm is pleased to welcome three new associates: Cassandra Ma, Allison Medjuck, and Hina Saeed. Cassandra received her Juris Doctor from the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law and Allison from the Faculty of Law at Queen’s University. Both Cassandra and Allison articled with the firm and will be practicing out of our Toronto office. Hina is a graduate of the University of Windsor Faculty of Law. She was called to the Bar in 2014 and practiced litigatation at a Hamilton law firm before joining Filion. Hina will practice out of our Hamilton office.

July 26, 2017: Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti welcomes Simon Marmur to the firm as an associate. Simon is a graduate of Osgoode Law School. After articling with a Toronto law firm, he clerked with the Federal Court for just over two terms. Simon will practice in our Toronto office.

June 23, 2017: Congratulations to partners Frances Gallop and Angela Rae! Both were honored at last night’s LEXPERT Zenith Awards Gala for their outstanding contribution to the advancement of women in the legal profession.

May 17, 2017:  Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti welcomes Andrew Kennedy to the firm. Andrew is a graduate of Queen’s University Law School. Before joining the firm, Andrew articled and practiced with a large, national law firm in Toronto.

The article, “Private pics made available in disputed disability claim” provides a summary of a recent decision where a master ordered a plaintiff to produce all Facebook photographs, despite the fact that these photographs were private to the public. The decision suggests that private photographs may be arguably relevant in civil actions where loss of enjoyment of life is alleged.
