Executive Summary
As a partner in the firm, Matthew represents employers with respect to all aspects of labour & employment law, He regularly assists with the drafting, implementation, and application of employment agreements and workplace policies. He also advises employers on a broad range of workplace issues, such as hiring practices, employee training, termination-related liability, union avoidance, corporate transformation, and cybersecurity.
Matthew regularly acts as lead counsel in disputes before labour boards, arbitration boards, the courts, and numerous employment-related administrative tribunals. His practice includes a significant component of litigation before the Ontario Labour Relations Board in union jurisdictional disputes, related employer/sale of business matters, and construction industry grievances. Matthew has extensive experience acting for both construction and non-construction employers in responding to applications for certification and unfair labour practice complaints.
Matthew also has significant experience in collective bargaining negotiations and has acted as lead spokesperson at the bargaining table for employers in both first collective agreements and renewal agreements. Matthew regularly provides collective agreement drafting advice.
When not litigating labour matters Matthew also has extensive experience conducting workplace investigations into complaints such as harassment, and also has a niche practice conducting fraud, theft, and whistleblower investigations.
Matthew is a published author who has written numerous articles on mergers, mental health in the workplace, and other topics relating to workplace governance. Matthew has also acted as a professor and is a frequent public speaker on employment law issues.
Before rejoining Filion, Matthew practiced management-side labour and employment law at a full service firm.
