Workers' Compensation Bootcamp: Seminar #1 WSIB Claims: Active management to achieve actual results

Effective management of workers’ compensation claims should be an essential tool in every employer’s kit. It can prevent unnecessary extended absences and surcharges and foster positive employee-relations.

This discussion will be led by Carissa Tanzola, Filion's newest partner, who previously served as a Vice-Chair at the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT). Carissa will be joined by Diane Laranja, who has practiced in the area of workers’ compensation for many years, and Cassandra Ma, who has direct experience in the policy area at the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).

Participants will learn:

The differences and similarities between compensable and non-compensable injuries, and why it matters

  • How to obtain and evaluate medical restrictions, including when and how to ask for further medical information and using independent medical examinations
  • How and when to make a defendable offer of "suitable modifies duties"
  • How to work along-side the WSIB in the claims management process
  • How and when to appeal WSIB decisions and prepare for a WSIAT hearing

Presenters:

Carissa Tanzola, Diane Laranja and Cassandra Ma.
