Raising the Floor: Four Provinces to Increase Minimum Wage on October 1, 2024

As of October 1, 2024, the following provinces will see an increase to their basic minimum wage come into effect:

  • Manitoba’s basic minimum wage will increase to $15.80/hour (from $15.30/hour)
  • Ontario’s basic minimum wage will increase to $17.20/hour (from $16.55/hour)
  • Prince Edward Island’s basic minimum wage will increase to $16.00/hour (from $15.40/hour)
  • Saskatchewan’s basic minimum wage will increase to $15.00/hour (from $14.00/hour)

In Case You Missed It: On September 1, 2024, the Northwest Territories saw the basic minimum wage increase to $16.70/hour.

Further minimum wage increases across Canada will occur periodically through 2025, with at least four jurisdictions set to increase basic minimum wage on April 1, 2025.

Takeaways

Employers will want to take note and ensure that their compensation complies with these minimum basic wages (where applicable), and any other relevant rules. Note that every jurisdiction has specific rules about the kinds of employees who do not need to be paid the basic minimum wage, as well as industries that may have different (often higher) applicable minimum wage rates.
